Doña Nicacia. The Face of Level Ground Trading Bolivia

Meet Doña Nicacia.  Like many Bolivians who farm in the canyons and narrow valleys of Los Yungas north of La Paz, she is an Aymara who also tends llamas in the ‘Altiplano’, the Andean high plateau.  During harvest, she and her grown children make the journey down ‘Death Road’ to her plot in Colonia La Estrella near Caranavi.  The harvest all comes at once and lasts about three months from April to June.  Her farm is 7 hectares, but she only farms coffee on two, the rest is citrus fruit trees and bush.  In 2006 she received training in organic farming practices to increase yield and coffee quality.  Agricabv, the Bolivian company that operates a certified organic coffee mill in Caranavi, helped Nicacia gain organic certification.  Her coffee receives organic and direct fair trade premiums and it is shipped to Level Ground.

“Yo me compre en esta colonia la Estrella un lote de 7 Has. Junto a mi esposo el año 2.000,  pero al cabo de un tiempo quede viuda, sin embargo trabajo junto a mis hijos el lote tenia cafetal tan solo ½. Hectárea y luego plante 1 ½. Variedad caturra que permanentemente cosecho todo los años cumpliendo las labores culturales para mantenerme, los hijos mayores se casaron  y se fueron solo tengo 2 hijos menores  a mi lado de los 5 hijos, con ellos mantengo mi cafetal no puedo ya aumentar mas por que tengo ya 50 años  en este momento.

Quiero ayudar a mis hijos para que en el futuro se hagan cargo para que mantengan y aumenten umpoco mas de cafetal

El año 2006 me comprometi a trabajar para ser luego certificado y por eso no me descuido de las labores culturales de mi cafetal. Para variar umpoco tengo plantaciones de cítricos para mi consumo. Como verán mi lote tiene suficiente espacio para realizar plantaciones nuevas.
